The V.I.P.s (1963)

In the grey mist of an unforeseen fog at London's Heathrow Airport, lives intertwine and destinies hang in the balance. The transatlantic flight to New York City, caught in the grip of the weather, becomes a crucible of emotion, ambition, and desperation. Among the stranded passengers is the elegant Frances Andros (Dame Elizabeth Taylor), a woman on the brink of abandoning her life of luxury. Bound by a passionless marriage to the wealthy industrialist, Paul Andros (Richard Burton), Frances yearns for the embrace of her new love, the charming gigolo, Marc Champselle (Louis Jourdan). But as the fog thickens, so does the plot, as a delay in departure gives Paul a chance to confront his wayward wife. Simultaneously, the tenacious Australian businessman, Les Mangrum (Rod Taylor), finds his destiny hanging in the balance. With his company under threat and a crucial board meeting looming in the Big Apple, every ticking second could spell his downfall. But the fog's silver lining appears in the form of his devoted secretary, Miss Mead (Dame Maggie Smith), who stumbles upon a solution in the unlikeliest of places – the hotel lobby. In another corner of the airport hotel, Max Buda (Orson Welles), a flamboyant movie mogul, is engaged in a race against time. If he fails to escape England by midnight, he faces a debilitating tax bill that could spell the end of his glittering career. Accompanied by his starlet, Gloria Gritti (Elsa Martinelli), Buda's fate is as shrouded in uncertainty as the foggy runways outside. Lastly, The Duchess of Brighton (Dame Margaret Rutherford), is embarking on her maiden flight in a last-ditch effort to save her ancestral manor. Her unexpected encounter with Max Buda might just be the stroke of luck she needs. As the fog descends over Heathrow, so does uncertainty, blurring the future for these V.I.P.s whose lives are now inextricably linked. Amidst the confusion and suspense, they are forced to bide their time in the confines of the airport hotel, awaiting the dawn of a new day and, possibly, a new life.
