Plot

In the autumn of her years, Carrie Watts finds herself confined within the stifling walls of a 1940's Houston apartment, her spirit unbroken but her freedom restrained by her overbearing daughter-in-law and her overly cautious son, Ludie. Despite their firm objections grounded in concerns for her health and finances, Carrie harbors an unquenchable yearning to journey back to Bountiful, the quaint Texas town of her youth, which she nostalgically refers to as "home." Each month, the arrival of her Social Security check ignites in her a renewed determination to escape the drab monotony of her present and revisit the vibrant memories of her past. But her aspirations are continuously thwarted by Ludie's health concerns and Jessie Mae's frugality, prompting a series of attempted escapes that are as heartbreaking as they are determined. Undeterred by her family's restrictions and the harsh reality that trains no longer stop in Bountiful, Carrie bravely embarks on her clandestine expedition, opting for a bus ride steeped in anticipation and uncertainty. Along the journey, she forms an unexpected bond with a young woman, sharing whispered secrets and cherished memories, painting a vivid picture of the bygone days of Bountiful. Unbeknownst to Carrie, her family's worry escalates into alarm, leading them to alert the police. Yet, against all odds, the indomitable Carrie Watts is steadfast in her quest, making a triumphant, if not bittersweet, final journey to her beloved Bountiful, in a touching testament to the enduring call of home.
