The Tramp (1915)

In the timeless classic, The Tramp (1915), we meet Charles Chaplin, a vagabond who navigates the world with a sprightly charm and a ragged kerchief. One day, while having his humble lunch by the roadside, his meal is cunningly swapped for a brick by a sly hobo. Undaunted, Chaplin makes do with a meal of grass and a tomato can finger bowl, unknowingly stowing the brick away in his kerchief. As he continues his journey, he stumbles upon the same hobo, now attempting to rob a farmer's innocent daughter. Armed with nothing but his kerchief-wrapped brick, Chaplin intervenes, landing a solid strike against the hobo. The scene escalates as the hobo's cohorts arrive, only to meet the same brick-laden fate and ending up taking an unplanned dip in the nearby river. However, the celebration is short-lived as Chaplin, covered in mud flung by the fleeing hobos, falls into a campfire. His trousers ablaze, he embarks on a comical, frenzied search for water, which he finally finds after a bit of fiery frolicking. The grateful farmer's daughter takes him in, offering a warm meal and a taste of domestic life. The farm proves to be a challenging arena for our tramp, his attempts at farm work resulting in a series of hilarious mishaps including a pitchfork accident, a grain sack blunder, and a messy encounter with rotten eggs. All seems well when he once again saves the day, warding off the hobos who return for a night-time robbery, but his heroics are met with an accidental shot from the farmer's gun. As he recovers, tended to by the farmer's daughter, a tender affection blossoms. However, when a rival suitor appears, the tramp recognizes his place. With a bittersweet farewell note, he picks up his trusty kerchief and brick, setting off once more on the open road, leaving behind a trail of laughter and a poignant tale of unrequited love.
