Plot

In the throes of creative famine, Auguste (Pascal Greggory), a seasoned playwright, grapples with the task of completing his latest masterpiece. Haunted by the shadows of his dissolved marriage to the enigmatic actress, Harriet (Julie Depardieu), he seeks solace and inspiration in their former shared sanctuary, a rustic country house. Here, he invites Harriet, and her new flame, Théo (Louis Garrel), with the hope of igniting the spark needed to finalize his play through rehearsals. Auguste's heart is twisted by the revelation of Harriet's liaison with Théo, igniting a desperate quest to rekindle their extinguished love. Harriet, however, counters his advances with a radical proposal of a free union, a polyamorous entanglement that seeks to rope in Fanny (Agathe Bonitzer), Auguste's youthful secretary. In this searing exploration of power dynamics, the quartet is drawn into an intricate dance of seduction and repulsion, a test of wills that delves into the murky depths of domination and submission. Each character, armed with their personal wounds and unfulfilled desires, struggles to navigate their impulses and emotional voids, numbing their pain within the entanglement of their complicated relationships.
