Plot

In the enthralling saga of "The Three Mesquiteers", we bear witness to the adventurous beginnings of a legendary series that spanned 51 films from 1936 to 1943. This spellbinding inaugural tale weaves a vivid tapestry of camaraderie and conflict in the rich grazing lands of San Juan Basin, New Mexico. The story takes flight with an army of World War I veterans, led by the charismatic Lullaby Joslin (Syd Saylor), as they brave the sun-scorched west to claim homesteads freshly opened by the government. Their march towards a hopeful future meets fierce opposition from the unyielding Canfield brothers (J.P. McGowan and Alan Bridge), staunch cattle owners determined to guard their government-granted grazing leases. In the midst of this escalating tension, enter Stony Brooke (Bob Livingston) and Tucson Smith (Ray Corrigan), a pair of audacious troublemakers whose carefree spirits belie their indomitable courage. When tragedy strikes one of the homesteaders, leaving his lovely sister Marian Bryant (Kay Hughes) alone and caught in a complex love triangle with Stony and Tucson, the duo rally the veterans into a formidable fighting unit. As they valiantly square off against the Canfields, the trio of Lullaby, Stony, and Tucson emerge triumphant, their friendship forged in the heat of battle. As they ride off into the mesquite-studded horizon, they christen themselves as "The Three Mesquiteers," thus igniting the flame of a series that would blaze across the silver screen for years to come. Despite the lone appearance of Syd Saylor as "Lullaby" in this first film, his spirited performance set the stage for the Republic's term-contract player Max Terhune, ensuring the legacy of the "Three Mesquiteers" remained unbroken. This timeless tale of hope, friendship, and unyielding courage has been masterfully reimagined in 1940's "Oklahoma Renegades," carrying forward the enduring legacy of the Mesquiteers.
