In the bustling port of Bangor, Maine in the 1820s, a beautiful yet deeply disturbed woman named Jenny Hager emerges from the shadows of her past to weave a dangerous web of manipulation and deceit. As a young girl, she cunningly stages a rescue of a boy, Ephraim Poster, from a river, knowing well he can't swim, and wins the praise of the townsfolk, setting the groundwork for her future schemes.
