The Spanish Gardener (1956)

In the radiant landscape of Spain, the rather stern British diplomat Harrington Brande (Sir Michael Hordern) takes on his latest assignment, his young son Nicholas (Jon Whiteley) by his side. The assignment is a bitter pill to swallow for Harrington, who had been yearning for a promotion, his career seemingly tarnished by the shattering departure of his wife. Yet, for the young and lively Nicholas, the Spanish outpost unfurls as an enticing adventure waiting to be explored. A bond blossoms between Nicholas and José (Sir Dirk Bogarde), their newly appointed gardener. A seemingly fragile boy, Nicholas finds a confidant and a mentor in the charismatic José, much to the chagrin of his father. Harrington's jealousy simmers, ultimately boiling over, and he prohibits Nicholas from interacting with José, adding a strain to their previously happy household. As the tension within the house ratchets up, an unexpected turn of events sees José unjustly accused of theft by another servant. This upheaval forces everyone to reassess their views and decisions.
