Crossroads (1942)

Paris, 1935. David Talbot, an esteemed diplomat of the French Foreign Service, basks in the glow of his picture-perfect life. He's on the brink of a prestigious ambassadorship to Brazil, managing a vast public trust, and intoxicated by the newfound bliss of marital life with his charming wife, Lucienne Talbot. But this harmonious existence is disrupted by the arrival of a cryptic letter addressed to a certain "Jean." This letter, though bearing David Talbot's name, demands the repayment of FF1 million, a sum tied to a dark past that David himself cannot recall. A past that accuses him of being Jean Pelletier, a criminal mastermind implicated in a bank robbery and a murder back in 1922. David's past is shadowed by a bout of amnesia, the result of a traumatic injury. His only lifeline to his past, the steadfast Dr. Andre Tessier, who treated him, firmly believes in his identity as David Talbot. Henri Sarrou, a cunning wine merchant, and Michelle Allaine, a sultry cabaret singer, are bent on proving that David is indeed the notorious Pelletier, their eyes fixed on the elusive million. Despite public absolution from the accusation, the mounting evidence gnaws at David, sending him on a quest to unravel the truth of his identity. His wife, Lucienne, blissfully unaware of the pressure bearing down on David, is caught in her own spiral of doubts. As her love for him remains undeterred, she can't shake off the unsettling thoughts about the man she's only known for a short time. In the heart of Paris, under the shadow of suspicion and intrigue, David's life becomes a labyrinth of secrets and lies.
