The Siege at Red River (1954)

In the dying blush of the American Civil War, November 1864, a Union train chugs into Greensburg, Ohio, whispering secrets of war. Among the motley mix of passengers, troops, and mail, it cradles the revolutionary brainchild of Dr. Gatling - the Gatling Gun. Only four such marvels exist, and the Union is eager to test one in the rugged landscapes of the West. However, lurking in the shadows are wily Confederate spies led by the steadfast Captain James S. Simmons, his Georgia volunteer crew disguised as Yankees, their eyes sparkling with cunning. They are privy to the secrets swaying with the train, ready to spring an ambush at Greensburg's railway station. The train halts, the trap is sprung, and the Confederate spies seize the dissembled Gatling Gun, camouflaging the weapon within an innocent elixir salesman's wagon. Simmons and his faithful Sergeant Guderman are entrusted with the crucial task of traversing the Union states, with the gun concealed and their identities masked. At a river crossing, they encounter a Yankee woman doctor, her ambulance wagon marooned, her plea for help testing their loyalties. But Southern chivalry prevails, and they offer assistance, further securing the Gatling Gun within her ambulance. In the unsuspecting Yankee town of Baxter Springs, they deliver the doctor and her patient to her home-clinic, the Gatling Gun safely stowed in a chest in the dining room. Their mission now twofold: to stay undetected and find a Confederate sympathizer within the town, their guide through enemy territory. Masquerading as elixir salesmen, they peddle their wares, but their mission is thrown into jeopardy as Union soldiers led by Lt. Braden, and an astute Pinkerton detective, Frank Kelso, descend upon the town. The hunt for the stolen Gatling Gun has begun, and the Confederate spies must navigate an increasingly treacherous path to deliver their precious cargo to the Confederate lines. The stage is set for a thrilling chase, a game of cat and mouse, where the stakes are as high as the destiny of a nation.
