Plot

Emerging from the bleak confines of a Siberian labor camp after twenty long years, Ukrainian Archbishop Kiril Lakota, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Lvov, tastes freedom once more. The young and troubled Father David Telemond, who becomes Lakota's unlikely confidant, escorts him to Rome. There, Lakota is instantly thrust into the heart of the Vatican, where the ailing Pope bestows upon him the mantle of Cardinal Priest—an honor that belies the turmoil beneath the surface. The world teeters precariously on the brink of war, a Chinese-Soviet feud festers, and the flames are fanned by a crippling famine in China, exacerbated by U.S trade restrictions. Amid this global chaos, the Pope's sudden death plunges the Vatican into uncertainty. However, the College of Cardinals, moved by Lakota's singular life journey and his authenticity, elect him as the new Pope. Now standing as Pope Kiril I, Lakota must navigate the labyrinthine corridors of power, grapple with self-doubt born out of his years in prison, and confront a world he barely comprehends. He's further burdened by the spiritual struggle of his friend, Father Telemond, whose beliefs are under intense scrutiny. As a new Pontiff, he must also find a solution to the escalating crisis in China. Interwoven with these unfolding events, a television news reporter offers occasional insights, providing viewers with a deep dive into the complex rituals and practices of the Catholic faith, particularly those involved in the ascension of a new Pope. The Shoes of the Fisherman thus creates a riveting blend of personal drama and political intrigue, set against a backdrop of religious tradition and global tension.
