The Secret of Dr. Kildare (1939)

In the heart of the bustling city, Dr. Leonard Gillespie, a hardworking physician, finds himself besieged by an affluent businessman, Paul Messenger. Paul expresses deep concern over his daughter Nancy's erratic mood swings and mysterious health issues. Enter Dr. Kildare, a dedicated young medic, who is tasked to decipher the enigma of Nancy's condition without revealing his true identity as a doctor. Whilst navigating this intricate masquerade, Kildare encounters Nancy's debilitating headaches and bouts of unexplained blindness, leading him to the realization that her afflictions are psychosomatic under Gillespie's sagacious guidance. Simultaneously, the pressure of relentless work and a lack of rest begins to take its toll on Gillespie. Unbeknownst to him, the relentless physician is plagued by a worsening cancer condition. As he collapses from exhaustion, Kildare is thrust into a precarious position. He must choose between assisting Gillespie with a groundbreaking sulfa-drug/pneumonia study, or forcing his mentor to rest and recuperate. Choosing the latter, Kildare plunges himself into the complex case of hysterical blindness, a choice that could potentially secure vital funding for the hospital from the millionaire Messenger. In a twist of fate, Kildare's parents appear in New York City, bringing with them a troubling revelation. The young doctor is oblivious to the fact that his father is gravely ill and seeking the expertise of a specialist. As Kildare finds himself entrenched in a web of medical mysteries and personal dilemmas, he must navigate these challenging waters, all the while keeping the secret of his professional identity from the enigmatic Nancy.
