Plot

In the frost-kissed aftermath of war in provincial Iceland, circa 1950, the once rotund teenager, Freyja, emerges from the shadows of America, reborn as a svelte widow, her 20-inch waist, a symbol of her transformation. With her, she brings seven suitcases filled to the brim with dresses that tell tales of a different world and a list of those who have ever dared to slight her. She finds shelter with her aunt and a socialist uncle, her sights set firmly on finding a new husband in this familiar yet changed landscape. But her intriguing persona invites suspicion from Agga, a young girl on the brink of adolescence who serves as our perceptive guide through this tale. As the story unfurls, it becomes apparent that both the complexities of the social hierarchy and the enigmatic Freyja herself are far more intricate than they initially seem. Struggling against the backdrop of class disparities, familial obligations, burgeoning pride, the tumultuous onset of puberty, and the captivating grip of Eros, the icy veneer of their lives fractures, revealing the tumult beneath.
