The Rookie (1990)

Nick Pulovski (Clint Eastwood), an intrepid cop assigned to the auto theft division, has had a career that, up until now, has been devoid of any substantial breakthroughs. A former race car driver turned law enforcement veteran, Pulovski's life takes a sudden turn when he uncovers a major car theft and chop shop ring led by the cunning Strom (Raul Julia). Seeing this as his golden opportunity to make a lasting impact, he becomes hell-bent on taking down Strom's illicit empire. Tragedy strikes when his partner Powell (Hal Williams) falls victim to a fatal incident during a mission gone awry, leading to the case being transferred to homicide and Pulovski being taken off the case. However, his pursuit of justice and revenge is undeterred. Thrown into this maelstrom of crime and vengeance is David Ackerman (Charlie Sheen), a freshly promoted detective who is teamed up with Pulovski in the wake of Powell's death. Ackerman, a stickler for the rules and haunted by a traumatic childhood incident, finds himself at odds with Pulovski's relentless pursuit of Strom, especially as he's still grappling with his new responsibilities. In a twist of fate, Pulovski is abducted by Strom's ruthless henchmen, leaving the burden of cracking the case squarely on Ackerman's inexperienced shoulders. Caught between his fears and duty, Ackerman must decide whether he can rise to the task and save his unyielding partner, in a thrilling race against time that tests the mettle of "The Rookie." Will he be able to overcome his past and embrace his new role, or will he crumble under the weight of the challenge?
