In the heart of London, young Paul Grahame exists in a paradox of high-society poverty, a consequence of his family's reckless spending and gambling habits. His mother, Hester Grahame, is a slave to materialistic desires, draining their finances on extravagant dresses, sparkling jewels, and luxurious household items. His father, Richard Grahame, squanders their remaining assets at the horse races, an addiction masked by the constant bailout from Uncle Oscar Cresswell. Amidst this financial turmoil, the Grahame's hire a new servant, Bassett, who unwittingly becomes the catalyst for an extraordinary revelation.
