Plot

In Paul Schrader's stirring new film, The Card Counter, audiences are introduced to the enigmatic William Tell (Oscar Isaac), an ex-military serviceman turned professional gambler, haunted by the spectres of his past. Embarking on a life of austere solitude on the casino circuit, Tell's only desire is to lose himself in the rhythmic dance of cards, seeking solace in the anonymity of each shuffled deck. However, his stoic existence is disrupted when he encounters Cirk, a young man seething with rage and driven by revenge against a shared adversary from their past, a retired military major. In the fiery crucible of Cirk's vengeance, Tell glimpses a chance for redemption, a path to cleanse the sins of his past. Drawing support from the enigmatic gambling financier, La Linda, Tell takes the volatile Cirk under his wing, journeying from casino to casino. Their shared goal? The glittering prize of the World Series of Poker in the neon oasis of Las Vegas. Yet, as they traverse the shimmering landscape of chance and fortune, keeping Cirk's thirst for revenge in check proves an elusive challenge, threatening to drag Tell back into the shadowy depths of his past. Imbued with Schrader's signature cinematic intensity, The Card Counter is a riveting journey into the world of gambling, revenge and redemption, where the stakes are higher than the turn of a card.
