The Red House (1947)

In the rustic charm of farm life, Pete (Edward G. Robinson) and Ellen Morgan (Dame Judith Anderson) have lovingly raised Meg (Allene Roberts) as their own, following her parents' mysterious disappearance during her infancy. As Meg evolves into a vibrant teenager, she persuades her companion, Nath Storm (Lon McCallister), to assist with the increasingly challenging farm duties, given Pete's declining mobility due to a wooden leg. However, a seemingly harmless shortcut through a woodland path back home ignites Pete's deep-seated fear, causing him to caution Nath about the chilling screams that pierce the nightly stillness and the unknown horrors concealed within the titular red house. Intrigued and unafraid, both Meg and Nath dismiss Pete's ominous warnings, embarking on an audacious exploration that sets them on a collision course with peril. Simultaneously, a tender romance blossoms between Meg and Nath, threatening to extinguish Nath's current relationship with his girlfriend, Tibby Rinton (Julie London), who has her own designs for him. As this intertwining saga unfolds, they all inch perilously closer to the lurking danger and the haunting truth hidden within the shadows of the red house.
