In the gritty underworld of crime, Terry Martin, an undercover cop masquerading as a fence, is meticulously weaving his web around Simon Bacig, the ruthless kingpin of a notorious gang. After six months in the shadows, Terry finds himself on the precipice of a breakthrough. As a final test of trust, Simon extends an invitation to a party, expecting Terry, a supposedly married man, to bring his wife along.
In response, Terry's superiors assign him an unlikely partner, Susan Reece. A fresh transfer from a data job in Kansas City, Susan is eager to leave desk duty behind and dive into the field. Despite Terry's intention for a swift in-and-out operation, Susan yearns for a long-term assignment and deliberately draws Simon's gaze.
