Plot

Harry Stone (Danny Aiello), once celebrated as a premier director, now teeters on the brink of Hollywood oblivion after delivering three consecutive box-office bombs. Suffering the pangs of imminent financial collapse due to unpaid taxes, Stone is coerced into directing a film he finds absurdly commercial and laughable. The film's impending release is seen by Stone as another impending disaster, certain to seal his downfall. In this period of introspection, Stone seeks solace in reconnecting with his son, daughter, and ex-wives, including Dyan Cannon, to reassess his life and contemplate his uncertain future. This narrative skillfully explores the inner turmoil a director endures as a film's release looms. His agent (Jerry Stiller) optimistically assures him of a forthcoming hit, while those around him cringe at the mere mention of the film-within-a-film, "The Pickle". This pseudo-satire features a gaggle of ultra-vanilla Kansas youths venturing into the cosmos with vegetables via a colossal cucumber. Landing on a parallel Earth where the inhabitants subsist solely on beef and meet their end at 49, the story unfolds. The film excerpts reveal Little Richard as the dying President of this bovine-devouring planet, Ally Sheedy as the Kansas group's leader, and Griffin Dunne as the President's aide who succumbs to Sheedy's charm. The fate of Harry Stone's career hangs in the balance as he grapples with the prospect of his latest film, The Pickle, either being his saving grace or his final flop.
