The Patriot (1998)

In the tranquil town of Ennis, Montana, immunologist Dr. Wesley McClaren has chosen a simple life over the adrenaline-fueled world of biological warfare, declining an offer to join the Biological Response Team (BRT) in Atlanta, Georgia, helmed by his friend Richard Bach. Wesley's peaceful existence with his daughter Holly and farmhand Frank is shattered when Floyd Chisolm, a local militia leader, instigates a deadly biochemical crisis. Fresh from a 52-day standoff, Floyd shocks the town by spitting on Judge Tomkins in court - a vile act that soon reveals itself to be the catalyst for a horrifying outbreak. Tomkins falls seriously ill, as does a police officer, and the town is swiftly sealed off as the BRT and army medical units scramble to contain the spreading toxin. As Holly waits in the doctors' lounge, Wesley and Richard race against time, trying to unravel the mystery of the deadly NAM37 toxin, a warfare product ten times more lethal than anthrax. The pair discover that Floyd knowingly infected himself with NAM37, intending to spread the toxin and then use an anti-toxin to protect himself. However, the anti-toxin merely slows the progression of the disease, and the town's fate looks grim. The plot thickens when Holly's blood sample reveals that she has been infected but is inexplicably unharmed, her body successfully fighting off the disease. Floyd, desperate for a cure, orchestrates a deadly jailbreak and seizes the local hospital, demanding Holly be handed over. In a thrilling turn of events, Wesley, Holly, and Frank manage to escape to their farm, fending off Floyd's men in a deadly encounter that costs Frank his life. They flee to the safety of Holly's grandfather's farm, leaving Wesley and his friend Ann to unravel the secret behind Holly and Ann's immunity in a clandestine lab. Just as they find the key to the cure, tragedy strikes. Holly is kidnapped by Floyd's men, forcing Wesley into a desperate rescue mission. The tranquil town of Ennis has transformed into a dangerous battlefield, and Wesley must risk everything to save his daughter and the town he loves.
