In the heart of Austria, the sudden marriage of her beloved sister leaves Katrin feeling adrift in a sea of loneliness. This void is seemingly filled when she is proposed to by Dr. Walter Fane, a cholera researcher and former student of her father. With a sense of newfound purpose, they embark on a journey to Hong Kong, but the shimmering excitement quickly fades as Katrin finds herself neglected in favor of Walter's relentless pursuit of scientific discovery.
