Plot

The Pagan Queen, a provocative exploration of the sunset of the pagan world in the heart of Europe, unfolds the tale of Libuse, the legendary Slavic queen who reigned over 8th century Bohemia. Endowed with supernatural abilities, Libuse's visionary foresight and remarkable wisdom bore the seed of Prague, a modern city in the heart of a changing culture. Alongside her stunning sisters, Kazi and Teta, and the indomitable Amazon Vlasta, Libuse governed the regional tribes with a firm yet gentle hand. However, when the serene farming community is besieged by marauders and internal strife for power, Libuse finds herself coerced into marriage by her own tribe. In her desperation, she chooses her long-time lover, the charismatic yet domineering ploughman Premysl, as her king. As Premysl seizes control and imposes his iron rule upon the once free farmers, a rebellion stirs. Vlasta, secretly smitten by Libuse, refuses to bow to the new regime. With her army of maidens, she dares to challenge the men of Bohemia, sparking a war that will change the course of their history. The Pagan Queen draws its inspiration from the romantic fairytales and plays of the 18th and 19th century penned by German authors Johann Karl Musaeus, Clemens Brentano, and Franz Grillparzer. Their rich narratives inject an enchanting blend of the supernatural, psychological, and philosophical into the storyline, causing a stir in the Czech Republic during the film's theatrical release.
