In the bleak aftermath of World War II, Susanne Wallner, a survivor of the concentration camps, returns to the skeletal remains of Berlin, her home city. Amidst the ruins, she finds an unexpected occupant in her apartment - the scarred and disillusioned Dr. Hans Mertens. A former surgeon, he has been rendered inept by the war's atrocities, seeking refuge in the numbing embrace of alcohol.
