Plot

Under the cloak of darkness, Dudley Wolff (Paul Harvey), his dutiful secretary Alfred Dunning (Robert Emmett Keane), and his trusted physician, Dr. Haggard (Henry Wilcoxon), find themselves entangled in a clandestine burial within Wolff's estate. The mansion then welcomes an unexpected guest, Wolff's daughter Catherine (Marjorie Weaver), who arrives bearing news of her recent nuptials with Roger Blake (Richard Derr). After a chilling encounter with a mysterious intruder, the bewildered Catherine is reassured by her parents that it was merely a nightmare. The plot thickens when Wolff discovers the secret grave to be empty. An anxious Catherine, desperate for answers, hires the slick private investigator Mike Shayne (Lloyd Nolan). To keep her father's disdain for detectives at bay, she introduces Shayne as her newly-wedded husband. As the evening unfolds, a gunshot rings out, leading Shayne to the lifeless body of Dr. Haggard. Amidst the ensuing police interrogation, darkness engulfs the Wolff household once more, interrupted only by the echo of another gunshot.
