Plot

In this stirring historical drama set in the heart of the 20th century, a gifted Russian Jewish vocalist, Fegele (Claudia Lander-Duke), is left behind in her village when her father (Oleg Yankovsky) embarks on a journey to America in 1927. He promises to send for her soon, but escalating anti-Semitic tension forces young Fegele to flee her homeland. She finds solace in England, adopted by a British family who rechristens her Suzie, erasing traces of her rich ethnic heritage. As Suzie (Christina Ricci) blossoms into adulthood, her innate musical prowess earns her a spot singing in a Parisian nightclub's revue. A cherished photograph of her father, believed to still be in America, fuels her yearning to reunite with him one day. Paris brings Suzie not only closer to her dream but also introduces her to a vibrant cast of characters, including the ambitious Russian showgirl Lola (Cate Blanchett) and captivating gypsy horse trainer, Cesar (Johnny Depp). Lola, in her relentless pursuit of wealth, falls for the charismatic opera star Dante Dominio (John Turturro), drawing both her and Suzie into the mesmerizing world of Dominio's opera company, managed by the shrewd Felix Perlman (Harry Dean Stanton). Amid the glitz and glamour, Suzie's heart is stolen by the enigmatic Cesar, igniting a passionate romance. Their shared happiness, however, is threatened as the ominous shadow of Nazi aggression begins to sweep over France. Suzie's Russian Jewish roots expose her to looming danger, forcing her to make a heart-wrenching decision. Should she abandon her love and friends in Paris to continue her search for her father in America? A poignant saga of love, ambition, and heritage, The Man Who Cried weaves a tapestry of personal quests set against the menacing backdrop of a world on the brink of war.
