Plot

Trading the bustling energy of New York City for the tranquil, small-town allure of Stoneville, Connecticut, John Hamilton leaves behind a secure corporate job as a graphic designer to chase his dreams of being a painter. However, his art, often labeled obscene by the town's conservative adults, has yet to win him any praise or acceptance, following a critically disparaged exhibition in New York. John's wife, Linda Hamilton, is a city girl at heart and an alcoholic, a secret carefully hidden from their affluent circle of friends in Stoneville. Their socializing is largely restricted to Brad and Vickie Carey and their domineering parents, and Gordon and Roz Moreland. While Linda finds solace and a semblance of city life in their company, John merely tolerates them. His real companionship lies with a group of innocent children who often play by the pond, where he sketches and finds inspiration. Everything changes dramatically when John returns to Stoneville after a brief trip to NYC, where he had turned down a lucrative job offer from his former boss - a decision that both enrages Linda and deepens their marital discord. He finds their house vandalized, and Linda missing, leaving behind a typewritten note of her intention to end their marriage. However, mysterious signs hint towards a darker possibility - Linda might have been murdered, casting a pall of suspicion on John. With the town's folk ready to take the law into their hands, and the authorities inching closer to pinning the crime on him, John finds himself in a desperate race against time. He must unravel the truth behind Linda's disappearance, and if she was indeed murdered, uncover the identity of the real killer. Amidst an atmosphere of hostility and mistrust, his only allies are Vickie, the one adult who has shown him genuine kindness, and the band of children who have always been his friends. As John navigates this treacherous terrain, he must be careful about who he places his trust in, while battling the prejudices and suspicions of a town that never truly accepted him.
