Plot

Under the cloak of night, Maloin, a dutiful switchman, presides over the desolate seaside railway station. His view from the towering control room reveals the secrets of the ferry harbor below. On this particular evening, as the last ferry docks, a spectacle unfolds that will change his life forever. A lanky figure, later known as Brown, steps off the ferry and swiftly veers off the usual path. He huddles in a shadowy corner, a silent sentinel awaiting his part in this mysterious exchange. Soon, a second man emerges, hurling a suitcase towards the secretive figure on the shore. The flickering tension between the two men erupts into a violent confrontation which ends with the smaller man sinking into the chilling depths of the bay, the suitcase still firmly in his grasp. All this, Maloin observes from his lofty perch, his heart pounding with fear and shock. The piercing creak of his control room door sends the murderer, Brown, fleeing into the obscurity of the night, leaving the suitcase to the mercy of the bay. Once the echo of footsteps fades, Maloin descends to the shore, a silent spectre in the aftermath of the deadly brawl. When he realizes the victim is beyond saving, he fishes out the suitcase, its contents unknown. The control room becomes the stage for his discovery – it's brimming with money. Dazed by the sight, he meticulously dries and counts the banknotes, locking the suitcase in the closet before dawn breaks and mundane reality resumes. As the new day begins, Maloin dons the mask of normalcy, keeping his secret hidden. He returns to his humble home, but the familiar path is tainted by the night's events. The promise of the suitcase's wealth elevates his family's lifestyle, but as they revel in newfound luxury, shadows grow longer, and others begin hunting for the missing case. The once ordinary switchman is now tangled in a web of crime and consequence, his life irrevocably altered by one fateful night in the control room.
