The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927)

In the shadowy underbelly of London, a sinister figure known as "The Avenger" prowls, hunting down blonde women and leaving a trail of fear in his wake. Amidst this chilling backdrop, a peculiar young man, distant and enigmatic, rents a room at the boarding house run by Mr. and Mrs. Bunting. His peculiarities, while evident, are overshadowed by the pressing need for rent in the Buntings' household. The young man's unusual request to remove the photographs of young women adorning his room does little to quell the unease that begins to creep into Mrs. Bunting's mind. As time unspools, Mrs. Bunting's suspicions intensify. Could their eccentric lodger possibly be the infamous Avenger, the faceless terror haunting London's nights? The fear takes on a personal hue as Daisy Bunting, their blonde model daughter, finds herself inexplicably drawn to the mysterious lodger. But she is also the object of affection for Joe, an ambitious police detective who has been assigned to the Avenger case. Seeing Daisy's budding feelings for the lodger, Joe's jealousy flares, fuelling his growing suspicion towards the newcomer. Caught in an intricate web of fear, suspicion, and intrigue, the fate of the lodger hangs in the balance. If Mrs. Bunting's hunch is correct, she may have just saved her daughter from a dangerous predator. However, if she's wrong, she could be catapulting an innocent man into a vengeful society's crosshairs and the wrath of a jealous detective. In this foggy tale of suspense, love, and terror, every Tuesday evening brings a new dread as the clock ticks towards unveiling the identity of The Avenger.
