Plot

In the close-knit Southern town of Linnet, at the dawn of the 20th century, thrives the infamous Hubbard family. Their reputation is tainted with the shadows of exploitation, as they ruthlessly squeeze the hard-earned coins out of the poor and the marginalized, poisoning the social fabric of the town. At the heart of this avaricious clan is the icy Regina Giddens, born Hubbard, a woman of relentless ambition. Estranged from her kind-hearted but terminally ill husband, Horace, who languishes in a Baltimore hospital, she wields an iron grip over their innocent and naive daughter, Alexandra. Regina's brothers, the shrewdly exploitative Ben, a bachelor, and Oscar, married to the fragile and tormented Birdie, are her partners in greed. Oscar's son, Leo, a slippery character devoid of integrity, is being groomed for a union with Alexandra, setting the stage for a disastrous alliance. The brothers' insatious thirst for wealth leads them to entice the affluent businessman, William Marshall, with a plan to erect a mill that promises prosperity at the cost of the town's impoverished. As the plot thickens, the brothers' scheme requires a hefty sum of $75,000 from Regina. In a chilling display of manipulation, Regina orchestrates the return of her ailing husband, using her daughter as a pawn to secure the crucial funds. However, Horace refuses to finance their venture, leading to a desperate act of embezzlement by Leo, who gambles on the chance to replace the stolen railroad bonds before their absence is noticed. As the threads of deceit unravel, the fate of each character hangs precariously. Will Horace and Alexandra uncover the depth of the family's treachery? Will Alexandra be forced into a loveless marriage with her unworthy cousin Leo, or will she escape this toxic family web? And ultimately, what legacy awaits her - to become a mirror of her ruthless mother, or her tormented aunt Birdie? The answers lie beneath the veneer of Southern gentility, within the twisted roots of the Hubbard clan.
