Larry Sole, a First Nations teenager, dwells in the secluded town of Fort Simmer in the Northwest Territories. He shares his home with his mother Verna and her often-absent boyfriend Jed, an outdoor guide. Still haunted by a tragic event from three years ago, known only as "the accident," Larry and his family have sought solace in this remote location. A stranger in a strange land, Larry finds himself isolated from his peers, most of whom don't understand his refusal to participate in the town's usual activities. His past connection to Darcy McManus, once a friend, now a tormentor, further complicates his life. Darcy's bullying is a stark reminder of the incident that led to their falling out and the subsequent relocation to Fort Simmer, a secret known only to Darcy amongst their peers. Larry's solitary world is momentarily brightened by his crush on a fellow classmate, Juliet Hope. However, the arrival of a new student, Johnny Beck, a tough outsider with enigmatic charm, threatens to disrupt this delicate balance. Johnny's friendship offers Larry a chance at the guidance he needs to navigate the social complexities of adolescence, but Juliet's attraction to Johnny could potentially strain their newfound bond. As Larry’s life intertwines with Johnny’s, the secrets of his past threaten to resurface, risking his carefully constructed anonymity. Simultaneously, Larry grapples with reconciling his current existence with his First Nations heritage, a task made more challenging by Jed's attempts to provide cultural guidance.
