In the colorfully unpolished heart of Glasgow, Scotland, we meet Barney Thomson (Robert Carlyle)—a humble barber confined within the walls of Hendersons' Barbers. A quiet soul with an introverted demeanor, Barney's life is an echo of his personality—desolate, lackluster, and gradually fading from the spotlight of the shop. For two decades, he has been a fixture at Hendersons', but his dwindling clientele nudges him further from the limelight, pushing him toward irrelevance. This humdrum existence takes a sudden, frenzied twist as Barney stumbles into the bizarre and macabre realm of a serial killer. A grisly homicide spree has gripped the city, with the elusive "Body Parts Killer" haunting the public consciousness, sending the victims' dismembered remains to their bereaved kin. The investigation, led by the hard-nosed Detective Inspector Holdall (Ray Winstone) and his assistant Detective Inspector Callum MacPherson (Kevin Guthrie), is at a standstill, prompting Chief Superintendent McManaman (Sir Tom Courtenay) to hand over the reins to the overachieving Detective Inspector June Robertson (Ashley Jensen). Barney's mundane world collides with this grim reality when he inadvertently kills his boss, Wullie Henderson (Stephen McCole), during a heated encounter over a job loss. As Barney grapples with his accidental crime, the investigators, led by Det. Holdall, start to suspect a chilling connection between Barney and the notorious Body Parts Killer—a notion dismissed by the ambitious Det. Robertson. Adding to the twisted chaos is Barney's self-centered, chain-smoking mother, Cemolina (Dame Emma Thompson), whose maternal instincts are as cold as her cigarettes. As she steps into the fray, Barney's life spirals further into absurdity, blurring the lines between his once-monotonous existence and the grotesque world of murder and deception.
