Plot

Set against the backdrop of the roaring 1920s in Cherokee Flats, Kansas, The Learning Tree chronicles the tumultuous journey of Newt Winger, a black mid-teen, as he navigates a world of racial tension and inherent injustice. Growing up in contrasting environments, Newt and his peer Marcus Savage each have their unique perspectives on life, particularly regarding their cohabitation with white neighbors, most of whom are steeped in generations of racism. Raised amidst love and support, Newt aspires to rise above the societal limitations placed upon him. His dreams of attending college persist, despite the relentless discouragement from a prejudiced white teacher who devalues him and his black classmates, seeing them as nothing more than future laborers. Newt's life is further complicated by his first love, a black girl named Arcella Jefferson, and his guilt over a petty crime involving a white orchard owner's apples. Marcus, on the other hand, has grown up devoid of love and abundant in abuse. His widowed father's cruelty has fostered in him a deep resentment and mistrust, especially towards the white community. Marcus' outlook is so warped that he even believes Newt, despite their shared experiences, is against him due to their differing attitudes towards their predicaments. Their relationship teeters on the brink of explosion when Newt becomes a clandestine witness to a murder. The truth that emerges from this event could be the spark that ignites the powder keg of racial tension simmering in the town. Faced with this dilemma, Newt must make a monumental decision that could alter not only his life but the very fabric of his community. The Learning Tree is a compelling exploration of the fears, frustrations, and ambitions that shape the life of a black teenager in small-town America during the 1920s. Over the course of less than a year, Newt is thrust into sudden manhood, forced to grapple with family relationships, enmities, and the harsh realities of human values.
