In the tense atmosphere of the 1930s Balkans, rich socialite Iris Carr abruptly severs her holiday, yearning for the familiar streets of London. As she boards her train, a fainting spell nearly causes her to miss her journey home. Dizzied and disoriented, she finds herself thrust into a compartment shared with a Baroness, her sickly sister, and an intriguing entourage. Among this motley crew is an Englishwoman, Miss Froy, a governess tethered to the Baroness' family. As the train chugs through the Balkan landscape, Iris and Miss Froy form a fleeting bond over tea, before a nap overtakes Iris. Upon awakening, she finds herself wrapped in a mystery as thick as the steam billowing from the train - Miss Froy has vanished. The twist?
