The Enterprise is on shore leave when they receive an emergency distress call to rescue diplomats on the planet Nimbus III. The crew and ship spring into action only to discover that the hostage situation is, in fact, a farse. It was organized by Sybok, half-brother of Spock, in order to acquire the use of a spaceship. Sybok, who seems to have become the leader of a cult, takes command of the Enterprise in order to take it to the legendary planet of Sha Ka, which is located in the center of the universe. Sybok believes that he will find God there.
