The Keeper (2018)

In the tumultuous aftermath of WWII, "The Keeper" weaves the extraordinary tale of love and resilience between Margaret Friar, an English woman with a heart full of fire, and Bert Trautmann, a German Prisoner of War with an indomitable spirit. Their paths cross in a PoW camp near Manchester, where Margaret's father, the manager of the local football team, is captivated by Bert's extraordinary goalkeeping skills. Defying the odds, Bert is released from the camp to play for the local team, paving the way for a romance with Margaret that blooms amidst the thorns of prejudice, public hostility, and resentment towards the German PoWs. As Bert continues to astound with his goalkeeping prowess, he catches the attention of Manchester's City Football Club. Choosing love over homeland, he marries Margaret and signs with the club, causing a stir amongst Man City's fans, a significant number of who are Jewish. Despite the storm of controversy, hope emerges from an unexpected quarter. Rabbi Altmann, a Man City devotee who escaped the Nazis' clutches, pens an open letter challenging the campaign against Bert. Slowly, acceptance begins to seep in, culminating in Bert's triumphant victory for Man City at the 1956 FA Cup Final, a feat he accomplishes despite a broken neck. Yet, life has a cruel way of testing love. Alienation, loss, and heartbreak threaten to tear Margaret and Bert apart. Faced with despair, Bert contemplates surrender, but Margaret's unwavering belief in their love and his talent drives them forward. "The Keeper" is a testament to the power of love and resilience in the face of adversity, a story that will grip your heart and refuse to let go.
