Plot

In the icy grip of Poland's winter, 1945, Mathilde Beaulieu, a young and devoted French Red Cross doctor, finds herself entangled in a story that will irrevocably change her life. In the aftermath of WWII, she is committed to healing the wounds of French soldiers, survivors of the German camps, when an unexpected encounter with a desperate Polish nun disrupts her routine. The nun's plea, delivered in broken French, leads Mathilde to a nearby convent, cloaked in secrets and shadows. A horrifying revelation awaits her; the convent has been a silent witness to unspeakable atrocities. During the Soviet liberation, the sacred sanctuary was desecrated, the defenceless nuns violated, and now seven of them are on the precipice of motherhood. An unusual quandary presents itself, a test of Mathilde's oath and humanity. The pregnancies are a sinful secret that must remain hidden to preserve the sanctity of the convent. If revealed, the nunnery would be closed, and the nuns, now perceived as tarnished, would be expelled into the cold world, stripped of their faith and dignity. Teetering on the edge of a precipice, Mathilde, alongside the compassionate Sister Maria, embarks on a delicate mission. They must help the expectant nuns, the childless Brides of God, reconcile their faith with the horrific past while upholding their vows of chastity. As the nuns grapple with their ordeal, reliving their trauma with each passing day, will their prayers provide the only solace? Will faith shine as the beacon in their darkest hour, and will Mathilde find new purpose amidst the chaos? Set against the backdrop of a war-ravaged Poland, The Innocents is a tale of resilience, faith and the indomitable spirit of humanity.
