Plot

Set against the backdrop of the 1980s in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, the boys of Cutlers' Grammar School are on the brink of a promising future. Their exceptional academic performance, the best in the school's history, catches the attention of the ambitious Headmaster (Clive Merrison). With visions of glory and prestige, and driven by aspirations of parental approval, he enlists the aid of a young Oxford graduate, Irwin (Stephen Campbell Moore), to guide this class through the labyrinth of entry exams for the illustrious universities of Oxford and Cambridge. Irwin's unconventional approach extends beyond traditional educational norms, encouraging the boys to stand out with surprising associations, unique perspectives, and witty expressions. The groundwork laid by the current faculty, including history teacher Dorothy Lintott (Frances de la Tour), a frustrated liberal feminist, and the passionate Mr. Hector (Richard Griffiths), who inspires through literature, open discussions, and creative performance, paves the way for this unique journey. Among the students is the gentle and sensitive David Posner (Samuel Barnett), a Jewish boy who shines in declamation and song. The charismatic class flirt, Dakin (Dominic Cooper), on the other hand, pushes all boundaries, including his and Irwin's sexual orientations as he navigates this transformative period. However, the school's journey takes an unexpected turn when the Headmaster discovers an innocent incident involving Mr. Hector, leading to a demand for his early retirement. This personal drama unfolds with surprising twists, underlining the story's emotional resonance. As the boys embark on this rigorous academic voyage, their lives become intricately entwined with those of the faculty. Through the education system's rigorous and creative spirit, they begin to contemplate their deepest desires and aspirations, not just in studies, but in life as a whole. The History Boys is a poignant exploration of education, youth, and the intertwining complications that forever alter their lives.
