Plot

In the untouched corners of the country, where whispers of an impending road construction hold the promise of progress, an ambitious patriarch, imbued with a pioneering spirit, persuades his family to seize a remarkable opportunity. The quirky ensemble consists of his aging yet sagacious father, his devoted and dutiful wife, a reluctant son, and a divorced daughter, burdened with a toddler but blessed with the gift of narration. Together, they courageously venture into a new life, transforming a barren space into a charming bed and breakfast, a haven of tranquility awaiting its first guests. Despite their diligent efforts, the silence of the telephone is only broken by the echo of their anticipation. The Katakuris pour their hearts into creating an idyllic retreat, blissfully unaware that their dream is about to morph into a macabre comedy of misfortunes. When the guests finally arrive, the family's elation is short-lived. Each new face brings an untimely demise, transforming the quaint guest house into an unexpected deathbed. To protect their fledgling reputation from the shadow of these peculiar events, the Katakuris hurriedly conceal the evidence, transforming the tranquil backyard into an unintended burial ground. The guests' inexplicable deaths range from the ordinary to the outlandish, from a solitary man's suicide to a famed sumo wrestler's fatal rendezvous with his underage lover. Each incident drags the Katakuris deeper into a labyrinth of absurdities, as the graves multiply and the secrets grow heavier. "The Happiness of the Katakuris" is a peculiar tale of a family striving to maintain normalcy amidst a cascade of bizarre events. As they navigate through this morbid reality, the Katakuris find themselves entangled in a web of death, secrets, and desperate attempts to prevent their dream from turning into a nightmare.
