The Guilty (2000)

Fresh out of prison for auto theft, Nathan Corrigan, an inherently good soul led astray, is on a quest for identity and acceptance. His journey takes a new turn when he learns from his mother, Maddy, that his preacher father, Martin Corrigan, is not his biological father. Instead, his real father is Callum Crane, a law student Maddy had a fleeting encounter with and who remains oblivious to Nathan's existence. Determined to connect with his roots, Nathan sets out to find Callum. On the other side of the city, Callum Crane, now a high-powered lawyer notorious for his amorality, stands on the brink of a federal judgeship. However, his life spirals into chaos when he rapes Sophie Lennon, a new secretary at his firm. To conceal his crime, he has Sophie fired, but not before she threatens to expose him unless he renounces his judgeship. In a desperate bid to silence Sophie, Callum, unknowing of their shared blood, contracts Nathan to kill her. He offers him a sealed envelope containing a $5,000 retainer and Sophie's identity, promising $25,000 more upon completion of the hit. However, Nathan, refusing to descend further into the world of crime, discards the envelope without even opening it. His life takes another unexpected turn when he befriends Sophie through a chance encounter with her roommate, Tanya Duncan, who harbors feelings for him. Unbeknownst to them all, Nathan's old partner-in-crime, Leo, steals the discarded envelope and decides to carry out the hit himself to settle a debt with a mobster. In the midst of this intricately woven web of secrets, lies, and desperate schemes, the lives of Nathan, Callum, Sophie, and Leo hurtle towards a collision that threatens to shatter them all. The question remains: can Nathan step in time to prevent a crime that he unknowingly set into motion?
