Plot

As the summer of 1900 unfolds, so does the tale of young Leo's thirteenth year. Amid the last vestiges of Queen Victoria's reign, he finds himself a guest in the opulent Norfolk countryside residence of his affluent schoolmate, Marcus. This grand house, steeped in tradition and wealth, serves as the backdrop for an intriguing coming-of-age saga. Leo finds an unexpected companion in Marian, Marcus' radiant elder sister, who stands on the precipice of an engagement to Hugh, a viscount of impeccable character. Marian, a vision of beauty and grace, adorns Leo with a forest-green suit and introduces him to the pastoral pleasures of countryside strolls. However, beneath the sunlit tranquility, a clandestine romance is blooming. Marian entrusts Leo with a delicate task: to serve as the messenger between her and their neighbour, Ted Burgess, a charming yet notorious rake. As Leo navigates through this web of secrecy, he grapples with the complexities of adult emotions and the burgeoning attractions between men and women. Caught in the crossfire of loyalty and deception, Leo morphs into the titular 'go-between.' He's aware of his betrayal towards Hugh, yet finds himself irresistibly drawn into the role, his innocence guiding his actions. This beautiful, yet complex tale explores the essence of innocence, love, and the painful journey towards understanding.
