Plot

In the aftermath of a war-ravaged Germany, Siggi Jepsen, a young man deemed difficult to educate, finds himself confined within an institution. Faced with a task to pen an essay on "The pleasures of duty", Siggi is initially at a loss. However, when forced solitude in a cell descends upon him, a floodgate of childhood memories invades his present, providing him with more than enough material for his assignment. These memories resurrect the image of his father, Jens Ole Jepsen, a police officer assigned an unsettling duty during the turbulent times of the Second World War. Jens was charged with enforcing a professional ban on Ludwig Nansen, a charismatic expressionist painter and family friend. As the specter of censorship loomed over Nansen, young Siggi was roped in to aid his father's mission. However, amidst the shadowy surveillance and oppressive constraints, Siggi found himself at a crossroads. Torn between obedience and rebellion, he boldly chose the latter, aligning himself with the defiant Nansen. In a daring act of resistance, he covertly safeguarded some of the forbidden masterpieces, a decision that would later lead him to his current confines. The German Lesson paints a riveting tale of youthful rebellion, the complex dynamics of duty, and the enduring power of art in the face of oppression. As Siggi's past unravels on paper, viewers are entwined in a compelling narrative of defiance and devotion, challenging the notion of duty and its supposed pleasures.
