The Dread (2007)

In the quiet tranquility of suburbia, a monstrous entity commits an unthinkable act, leaving a couple in a gory demise. The police, baffled by the gruesome crime, find no culprits but two innocent children, Alex and Teri, the sole survivors and silent witnesses to the horror. While four-year-old Teri is adopted, eight-year-old Alex, traumatized into a catatonic state, is admitted into Briarcliff Psychiatric Hospital. Nineteen years on, Teri, oblivious to her biological roots and the terror of her past, is beckoned to the deathbed of her adoptive mother. The mother's drug-induced ramblings about the "brother" and the "abhorrent event" opens Pandora's box for Teri. Unraveling her past, she learns about her real parents' gruesome death and her catatonic brother, Alex. Accompanied by her boyfriend Chris, she ventures to the dilapidated Briarcliff to confront her past. The institution, on the brink of closure, is eerily vacant, except for a few remaining patients, including Alex, who remains unresponsive, trapped in his own mind. Yet, Teri's arrival triggers an avalanche of horror as the terrifying creature resurfaces in the darkness, claiming lives in grotesque ways. Enter Detective Nick Walenchky, who initially investigated the murder of Teri's parents, now summoned to solve the mysterious killings at Briarcliff. When an inexplicable power outage seals the institution, trapping Teri, Chris, Nick, Derek - a resilient orderly, and Diane - the sharp-witted hospital administrator, inside, they must unite to survive. As the night of terror unfolds with mounting casualties, Alex vanishes from his locked room, escalating the already tense atmosphere. The chilling truth slowly comes to light - the monster causing all the mayhem is none other than Alex himself. Teri is forced to confront the horrifying reality: her own brother is the embodiment of evil. As she grapples with this revelation, she's left wondering if the monstrous bloodline runs through her too.
