The Disenchanted (1990)

In the heart of Paris, 17-year-old Beth grapples with a life that offers little more than despair. Her world is a jigsaw puzzle of bleak prospects: a callous boyfriend who suggests she test her love for him by sleeping with repulsive men, a bedridden mother who is all too eager to offer Beth to her wealthy, aging physician-lover in exchange for financial stability, and a younger brother who relies on her for sustenance. Beth's journey takes a turn when she encounters a nerdy boy at a disco, who offers her a brief glimpse into the world of affluence. However, she quickly departs, not without pawning a book from his collection to provide for her family. Soon, her path crosses with a middle-aged writer, Alphonse, who saves her from a squabble with her boyfriend along the serene banks of the Seine. Intriguingly, Alphonse harbors intentions of seducing her, adding another layer of complexity to her existence. Amidst the turmoil, Beth's only refuge is her artist friend, Chang, who despite his inability to offer her shelter, provides a comforting presence in her tumultuous life. As her circumstances continue to spiral, Beth is faced with a daunting decision: to surrender to the advances of her mother's sugar daddy, the physician. In a world where choices are scarce and the stakes high, Beth finds herself standing on the precipice of adulthood, confronting the harsh realities of life and love.
