Plot

A slightly fictionalized account of the true story of one of Britain’s greatest archaeological discoveries – the burial ship of an Anglo-Saxon warrior-king dubbed the Sutton Hoo Man. The site was excavated not by a professional archaeologist but by Basil Brown, a common man with a grade-school education who happened to be a savvy excavator. Brown is hired by wealthy Suffolk widow Edith Pretty who wanted mounds on her property investigated. As the dig ensues, Pretty is coping with serious illness and worries deeply about her young son becoming orphaned. Basil strikes up a heartwarming friendship with the boy.
