Plot

As the 1930s unfurl their sepia-tinted charm, Hollywood, the radiant town of dreams and tragedies, pulls in the hopeful and the hapless alike. Among these are Yale-educated Tod Hackett, a fledgling in Paramount's art department, whose ambitions soar towards becoming an art director, and Faye Greener, an aspiring actress with her eyes set on wealth and fame. Faye, a blonde bombshell whose talent has been confined to mere screen extras, lives with her former vaudevillian father. Harry Greener, now a door-to-door tonic salesman, uses his old clown antics to peddle his wares. Faye's quest for affluence leads her to consider marriage to a wealthy suitor, yet her vivacious spirit is not opposed to dalliances with those who can't offer her a diamond ring. Their paths intertwine within the crumbling walls of the San Bernardino Arms, a ramshackle bungalow court residence. Tod is instantly smitten by Faye's allure, and in the whirlwind of his affection, he plunges headlong into love. Faye, however, has a different plan. She entwines herself in a peculiar business arrangement with Homer Simpson, a seemingly pious accountant whose social and sexual anxieties simmer beneath his placid exterior. As Tod navigates his way through the Hollywood labyrinth, seeking to ascend the studio ladder with every tool at his disposal, he encounters the tantalizingly good, the disappointingly bad, and the grotesquely ugly facets of life in Tinseltown. Simultaneously, Faye, Tod, and Homer become entangled in the ruthless Hollywood system, a vortex of sycophants, fortune seekers, and parasites, which gradually saps their vitality and spirit. As the narrative unfolds, it becomes clear that their shared journey is a dance with inevitable tragedy, merely waiting for the perfect trigger. This is a tale of dreams and desperation, loneliness and cruelty, set against the glamorous yet unforgiving backdrop of 1930s Hollywood.
