Plot

In the tranquil outskirts of Copenhagen, nestled in Hellerup, Erik, a distinguished architecture lecturer, becomes the inheritor of his father's grand old mansion. His spouse, Anna, a celebrated television anchor, devises a plan to breathe new life into their monotonous marriage by proposing a commune. They invite their friends to share their vast living space, hoping the company will dilute the mundanity seeping into their lives. Soon, the country house teems with a disparate crowd of women, men, and children. Engaging in common decision-making, engaging discussions, and group outings to the nearby Øresund strait for a swim, they form a unique community. But their contrasting peculiarities and quirks lead to friction, threatening the fragile balance they've managed to establish. This delicate ecosystem is further disrupted when Erik's heart finds a new beat in his student, Emma, who subsequently moves into the house. Amidst this emotional turmoil, their fourteen-year-old daughter, Freja, stands as a detached observer, navigating her own path amidst the ensuing chaos. The Commune (2016) is a compelling exploration of relationships, love and the complexities of communal living.
