Plot

In the macabre world of The Comedy of Terrors, we explore the twisted life of Waldo Trumbull, the alcohol-addled proprietor of the Hinchley & Trumbull Funeral Parlor. Trumbull, a devious cheat, is shackled to a marriage of convenience with Amaryllis Trumbull, the daughter of his business predecessor, Amos Hinchley. His unscrupulous tactics are as dark as his business, reusing a single coffin for over a decade, unceremoniously dumping corpses into their final resting place only to sell the casket anew. Trumbull's cunning isn't limited to his business practices. He skillfully manipulates his only employee, Felix Gillie, a former bank robber, with the threat of exposure. Gillie's only solace is his fondness for Amaryllis and her enchanting voice, which Trumbull cruelly silences. With a year's worth of rent overdue, and the relentless landlord, Mr. John F. Black, demanding payment, Trumbull's desperation reaches a fever pitch. Bereft of clients, he hatches a ghastly plan to murder Mr. Phipps, hoping to drum up some business. The plan backfires when Mrs. Phipps absconds to Europe, taking her wealth and leaving no payment for the funeral service. Driven to extremes, Trumbull plots to extinguish Mr. Black himself, seeing it as the only way to resolve his financial woes. However, his plot unravels when the supposedly deceased Mr. Black, suffering from epilepsy, is mistaken for dead and kept in a crypt instead of being buried. A chilling cry in the night from the cemetery alerts the keeper, and Mr. Black is freed, setting off a chain of events that embroil Trumbull in a horrifically comedic night of terror.
