Plot

Set in the stark yet soulful canvas of the Great Depression-era Midwest, "Paper Moon" paints an unconventional portrait of the unlikely duo, Moses Pray and Addie Loggins. Moses, a seasoned con artist and Bible salesman, crosses paths with Addie, a sharp-witted girl with an old soul, at the scarcely attended Kansas funeral of a woman he once knew. Finding himself reluctantly agreeing to transport Addie to St. Joseph, Missouri, Moses embarks on a journey that's as much about his hustle as it is about his heart. As they traverse the barren landscapes of the Depression-ridden Midwest, Addie quickly becomes privy to Moses' cunning schemes, which include peddling expensive custom Bibles to the bereaved spouses of the recently deceased. Intrigued and undeterred, she quickly becomes an integral part of his hustling operations, transforming their relationship from a forced alliance to a prolific partnership. Their journey is peppered with a host of vibrant characters, among whom Miss Trixie Delight, an exotic dancer, and Imogene, her hapless companion, stand out. When Moses rescues them from a traveling carnival, Addie perceives Miss Delight as a threat and masterminds a clever plan to rid themselves of her. The film, directed by Peter Bogdanovich and adapted from the novel "Addie Pray" by Joe David Brown, is a rich tapestry of regional dialogue, memorable encounters, and the profound question of whether Moses might indeed be Addie's father. As they delve deeper into their journey and their rapport strengthens, the line between hustling and genuine connection blurs, creating an unforgettable odyssey through the heartland of America.
