In the quaint parish of St. Augustine's, Billy Smoortser, a youthful priest in his thirties, is constantly at odds with the seasoned Father O'Herlihy. Billy's unconventional sermons, often featuring tales unrelated to faith or devoid of moral lessons, vex Father O'Herlihy. Billy's approach to his pastoral duties mirrors the capriciousness of teenage years, as if time has paused for him in adolescence. When Father O'Herlihy recommends a vacation to help Billy refocus on his religious calling, Billy embarks on a rejuvenating canoe journey down the river with Robbie Shoemaker, a long-lost friend he recently reconnected with online. Robbie, a former boyfriend of Billy's elder sister Janice, was a high-school hero, a death metal band member and a clandestine writer. Billy idolized Robbie, often sharing his undisclosed stories with his parish, hoping to emulate Robbie's cool demeanor. The canoe trip serves as a voyage down memory lane, bringing back the nostalgia of their youthful days when Robbie was the epitome of cool and Billy was the dorky fan. But as the trip progresses, the two men find themselves pulled in different directions, spurred by startling revelations and a desperate longing for something more from their journey. Their adventure takes a wild turn when they lose their way, making their time together transformative and unforgettable. Amidst the wilderness, they encounter a peculiar trio who dub themselves Huck Finn, Tom Sawyer, and Jim, with Huck and Tom on a mission to guide Jim to freedom. As Billy and Robbie navigate the unexpected twists and turns of their journey, they discover that sometimes, getting lost is the best way to find oneself.
