Plot
In the tranquil village of Tremolat, nestled within the heart of Périgord, a solitary schoolmistress, Helene, forms an unlikely bond with the town's butcher, Popaul, during the joyous celebration of her colleague Leon Hamel's wedding. Popaul, a man of simple pleasures, and Helene, nursing the wounds of a past relationship, tread the delicate path of companionship, resisting the transformation of friendship into love. On Popaul's birthday, a spark of affection prompts Helene to gift him a lighter, an object that soon becomes a chilling symbol of fear and suspicion.
Amidst this dance of emotions emerges a sinister thread that weaves itself into the fabric of the village's life. A serial killer is on the loose, ruthlessly stabbing young women in the area, and the community is shrouded in terror. During a class trip to a local cave, Helene stumbles upon a horrifying scene - the killer's latest victim, none other than Leon's wife. What chills her to the bone, however, is the discovery of Popaul's lighter next to the lifeless body, a gift turned damning evidence.
In the ensuing panic, Helene conceals this damning discovery from the police, her mind a whirlpool of confusion and dread. The tension escalates when Popaul pays her a visit, and to her relief, he innocently produces the lighter, seemingly untouched by a killer's hands. Relieved, yet not entirely reassured, Helene's world is once again thrown into chaos when she uncovers a shocking secret during Popaul's innocuous painting of her house ceiling, a revelation that threatens to shatter her fragile sense of security.
The Butcher (1970) is a gripping tale of friendship, suspicion, and fear set against the backdrop of a seemingly peaceful French village, where the most ordinary objects can become chilling symbols of a deadly secret.
