Plot

The Boys Are Back paints an emotional and authentic portrait of fatherhood, set against the stunning backdrop of South Australia. The story pivots around Joe Warr, a sharp-witted, adrenaline-fueled sports journalist whose life takes an abrupt detour into single parenthood following the tragic loss of his wife to cancer. Suddenly charged with raising two sons—his inquisitive six-year-old and a rebellious teenager from a prior marriage—Joe boldly dismisses conventional parenting advice, opting instead for a 'just say yes' philosophy. This unorthodox approach to child-rearing infuses their lives with a wild, instinctual energy, transforming their household into a whirlwind of chaos and laughter teetering on the brink of calamity. Joe's rejection of the traditional and his embrace of the unpredictable creates a household devoid of feminine influence and conventional rules. This exhilarating, yet precarious, environment forces the three generations of Warr men to navigate their own paths to maturity. As Joe grapples with his new role, he finds himself not only battling to keep his family intact but also striving to understand his own place in this rearranged life. Meanwhile, his sons, as bewildered and lost as their father, must confront their own confusion and the void left by their mother's absence. The Boys Are Back is a heartfelt tale of resilience and growth, charting the journey of a father and his sons as they stumble, laugh and grow together amidst the tumult of grief and the trials of adolescence.
